How to Give Support
The first week is the hardest, and when they will need the most support.

Keep a small notepad handy to track medications; when and what was taken, and when the next dose is due. This became especially helpful once I started feeling better, since sometimes my husband would give me a dose and other times I’d take it myself. To make things simple, we kept all the medications and the notepad on the dining room table for easy access.

Walking is a big part of the healing process after surgery. When we got home from the hospital, I took a long nap. Once I woke up, my husband encouraged me to walk beyond just the trip to the bathroom. I resisted at first, but quickly realized how much better I felt, especially after meals, when I got up and moved around a little. Encourage your loved one to walk, too, and give them company on those easy strolls.

For partners, it’s important to know that sexual activity is off limits for at least eight weeks after a hysterectomy. This isn’t just a guideline—it’s crucial for proper healing and preventing complications. Use this time to focus on emotional closeness, gentle support, and patience. The physical side of intimacy will come back when it’s safe, but honoring this rest period makes recovery stronger in the long run.
Gifting Ideas
Acts of Kindness
The most thoughtful gift I received was a handwritten card from a coworker. In the first week, I had lots of people checking in, but getting a card a couple of weeks later felt extra special; it reminded me I wasn’t forgotten once the initial flurry had passed. And sometimes, support looks like simple acts of care.
